The Rhythm–Dyslexia Connection: What Clinicians and School Leaders Should Know

When reading difficulty persists despite strong instruction, the barrier may sit underneath the literacy skills themselves, in timing, sequencing, attention, and working memory.

For many students with dyslexia, reading difficulty persists even when they receive explicit, evidence-based literacy instruction.

That does not mean phonics or structured literacy are ineffective. It may mean some students also need support with the underlying processes that make fluent reading possible, including auditory timing, sequencing, attention, and working memory.

A growing body of research points to rhythm processing as one of those underlying systems. For clinicians, this research offers another way to understand persistent reading difficulty. For administrators, it raises an important question: are intervention systems addressing both observable literacy skills and the processes that may be limiting progress?

Reading is supported by a broader set of skills

Established models of reading emphasize two essential areas:

  • Word recognition, including decoding and phonological awareness
  • Language comprehension, including vocabulary and knowledge of language structures

More recent models, including the Active View of Reading, build on this foundation. They recognize that reading also depends on processes such as auditory perception, attention, working memory, processing speed, and self-regulation.

These processes help students connect spoken language, print, meaning, and fluent expression. When they are inefficient, students may know individual sounds and patterns but still struggle to read accurately, automatically, or with appropriate pacing.

This distinction is important for both diagnosis and intervention planning. Persistent difficulty may not reflect a lack of instruction, motivation, or effort. It may indicate that the student needs a more comprehensive approach.

Why rhythm may matter for reading

Speech is organized through timing. To understand spoken language, the brain must detect:

  • Where syllables begin and end
  • How sounds are ordered
  • Which sounds or words are stressed
  • How quickly speech changes
  • How patterns of sound contribute to meaning

These temporal cues support phonological awareness, speech-sound discrimination, language processing, and fluency.

Some students with dyslexia appear to process these timing cues less efficiently. That can make it harder to distinguish sounds, hold sound sequences in memory, segment words, or coordinate decoding quickly enough for fluent reading.

Rhythm-based activities directly exercise timing, sequencing, prediction, and synchronization. This is why rhythm may be clinically relevant: rhythmic processing overlaps with important language and reading systems. Engagement is a bonus, not the mechanism.

The research points specifically to rhythm

Music includes melody, pitch, harmony, and rhythm. Current research suggests rhythm and temporal processing may be particularly relevant to dyslexia.

In one study of cognitive-musical training, children with dyslexia improved in speech-sound categorization and in their perception of syllable duration. They did not show the same improvement in pitch discrimination. The authors noted that the intervention emphasized rhythmic and temporal features rather than pitch.

Another longitudinal study compared children with dyslexia who received music training with children who received painting instruction. After music training, researchers observed changes in the automatic processing of voice onset time, a timing cue used to distinguish speech sounds such as /b/ and /p/. That same change was not found after painting training.

The implication is not that music instruction alone is a reading intervention. Rather, structured rhythmic practice may help strengthen temporal processing in ways that support speech and literacy development.

What this means for clinicians

For reading specialists, interventionists, academic language therapists, and other clinicians, rhythm-based practice may provide an additional tool for students whose progress has remained slow.

Relevant activities may include:

  • Reproducing rhythmic patterns through tapping or movement
  • Matching syllables to beats
  • Practicing sound sequences with consistent timing
  • Coordinating auditory, visual, verbal, and motor responses
  • Connecting rhythm practice to phonological awareness and oral reading

These activities should not replace direct literacy instruction. They may complement it by targeting processes that support phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, attention, and working memory.

What this means for school and district leaders

For administrators, the research has implications for how intervention systems are evaluated. A reading intervention should not be judged only by whether it includes familiar literacy components. Leaders should also consider:

  • Which students the intervention is designed to support
  • Whether it addresses persistent barriers beyond basic skill instruction
  • How it fits within MTSS, special education, or dyslexia services
  • Whether implementation is practical within the school day
  • Whether progress can be monitored consistently
  • Whether the approach complements existing structured literacy instruction

This matters because schools are often not choosing between foundational instruction and a rhythm-based intervention. The more useful question is whether an additional intervention can help students access and benefit from the instruction already in place.

For students with persistent reading difficulty, an approach that targets both literacy skills and underlying processing may provide a more complete response.

Translating the research into practice

Poppins applies this research through interactive rhythm, language, and reading exercises for students with dyslexia and other reading challenges.

The program combines rhythmic sequencing, phonological processing, multisensory literacy activities, and oral reading practice. Its rhythm-based exercises target timing, auditory processing, and sequencing, while its literacy exercises reinforce skills such as phonological awareness, decoding, word recognition, and fluency.

The experience is designed for short, structured practice, about 20 minutes a day, and adapts to the student’s performance. This may make it easier for schools and clinicians to add consistent practice without replacing core instruction or requiring a separate curriculum.

The approach has been studied in two randomized trials. One (n=151) is published in Scientific Reports, a Nature Portfolio journal, 2025, where children who practiced with Poppins showed gains in reading fluency and speed compared with a control group. A second, larger trial (n=306) compared Poppins added to weekly reading-specialist sessions against those weekly sessions alone; it is complete but not yet peer-reviewed or published, so we describe it as tested, never “published.” Our science page sets out both in full.

To be plain about what Poppins is: an educational reading practice, built with neuroscientists. It is not a medical device, and it is not a cure. In the U.S., dyslexia is recognized as a specific learning disability under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA): an educational difference, not a disease.

A more complete view of intervention

The rhythm–dyslexia connection does not change the importance of structured literacy. It expands the way professionals think about why some students continue to struggle.

For clinicians, it provides a research-based rationale for addressing timing, sequencing, and auditory processing alongside literacy skills.

For administrators, it supports a broader approach to intervention, one that considers both what students are being taught and the underlying processes that may affect how effectively they learn.

When schools address both, they may be better positioned to help students move from effortful reading toward greater accuracy, fluency, and confidence.
